SJA Band Program - Grades 5-8
Students at St. Joan of Arc are able to take band as a class starting in 5th grade. They meet 3 times a week during the school day and perform a minimum of two concerts a year; the Christmas Concert in December and the Spring Concert in May.
As they progress through to seventh and eighth grade, the Junior High Band performs at a few more events. They supply entertainment and spirit for assemblies and special programs like Grandparents Day and the Veterans Day Program and also aide in the worship service by performing at Mass a few times a year.
In addition to the extra “in-school” performances, members of the Junior High Band have the opportunity to attend numerous Honors Bands in the area. These groups are by audition and we have a history of being very strongly represented. The students may also choose to participate in the Ohio Music Education Association (OMEA) Solo and Ensemble event. This is an opportunity to perfect a solo or a small ensemble (like a clarinet trio, for example) and perform it for a small audience and a judge. They will not only walk away with more confidence, but they receive comments and ratings from the judge. Last year, all of our events received the top rating of Superior!
It is also important to prepare those who wish to continue in band after St. Joan of Arc for high school band. We do a small amount of work with memorizing music and marching while we play. It is my hope as their teacher that they make playing their instrument a lifelong pleasure and continue through high school, then college, and eventually into their adulthood where they can enjoy playing in various community bands. I realize that a small fraction will actually play past college, but I can dream, right?!
